Starting a t-shirt business using DTF printing can be an exciting opportunity. At Arrowhead Trading Company, we specialize in DTF transfers and use Mimaki DTF equipment, renowned for its exceptional quality. In this guide, we will walk you through the essential steps to launch your t-shirt business with DTF printing.
What is DTF Printing?
Some of you may have begun reading this article thinking "What am I reading? In this case though DTF stands for Direct-to-Film printing. It is a modern printing method where designs are printed onto a special film and then transferred onto t-shirts and other apparel items. This method is celebrated for its high-quality, vibrant prints and durability. Although we still get funny looks from time to time when we mention or recommend DTF printing, rest assured this is a PG article.
Key Benefits of Starting a business using DTF Printing:
High Quality: DTF prints are crisp and colorful.
Versatility: Works on various fabrics, including t-shirts, hoodies, bags, and even hats.
Durability: Prints last through many washes without fading.
Price: You purchase transfers as needed, no need for inks or specialized equipment.
Personalization: Easily personalize individual items without additional setup.
Why Choose DTF Printing for Your T-Shirt Business?
Choosing DTF printing for your t-shirt business offers several advantages:
Exceptional Print Quality: With DTF printing, you can produce sharp and vibrant designs that stand out. There is no limit to color changes in the design, unlike screen printing where you may have to limit your colors due to the color limitations of the press.
Wide Fabric Compatibility: DTF prints can be applied to a variety of materials, including cotton t-shirts and dark colored items. Unlike sublimation where you must ensure you have at least 50% polyester and can only print on light colored items.
Long-Lasting Prints: The durability of DTF prints ensures that they remain bright and intact even after many washes.
At Arrowhead Trading Company, we use Mimaki DTF equipment, known for its top-notch performance and reliability. Our investment in these advanced machines ensures that you receive the best transfers available, with prints that look great and last.
Steps to Start a T-Shirt Business Using DTF Printing
1. Develop a Business Plan
Creating a solid business plan is crucial and one of the hardest steps:
Choose a Business Name: Pick a memorable name that reflects your brand and what you offer. Make it something people will remember. Check with the Secretary of State where you plan to start your business to make sure the business name is available and not already in use.
Determine Your Business Structure: Always consult an attorney and/or your tax professional for how these decisions may affect your business in the future.
Conduct Market Research: Look at what other t-shirt businesses are doing or not doing. This helps you find ways to stand out from the competition and grow your business.
Identify Your Target Audience: Decide who your ideal customers are, such as sports teams, schools, or fashion enthusiasts.
2. Acquire the Necessary Equipment
To get started, you will need the following:
Heat Press: Essential for transferring your designs from the film to the t-shirt, hoodie, bag, etc. Size will be key here. Oversize shirts for example (Think 3XL and up) can require a print to be fourteen inches or more in size. If your press is smaller than this you will either not be able to press the design or try and struggle to make multiple presses, resulting in a less than stellar print. For pressing hats, we strongly recommend using a quality hat press. Low quality hat presses can wrinkle your hat, leaving a less than desirable result. The good news is Arrowhead Trading Company loves our small business partners, as we too are a small family-owned business. If you cannot afford to start your business with a larger press, or hat press, we have those pieces of equipment and can help. We can also help with sourcing blank apparel and accessories through our many wholesale distributors.
Heat Tape:Â While not necessarily a requirement, it helps keep your transfer in place while pressing. It is relatively inexpensive and can prevent headaches when your transfer moves as you close the press. Trust me, it is not if your transfer will move, it is when.
Guide to Line Up Transfer: Again, this is one of those things that is not required, but when starting out can be a huge help. Sometimes "eyeballing it" will result in crooked or misplaced prints.
3. Design Your T-Shirts
Designing your t-shirts is an exciting part of the process:
Create Unique Designs: Use graphic design software to develop eye-catching designs. Tools like Adobe Illustrator or Canva are great options. We personally use Adobe software including Illustrator and Photoshop. Do not worry if you do not have the skills to create your vision, you can always outsource the design process to a graphic designer. This is highly recommended as designing can eat up a lot of precious time in a small business. You can also purchase designs online if you do not want to hassle with designing.
Ensure Your Artwork is High Quality: This is very important for sharp clear prints. Vector artwork is always best as it can be sized up or down without affecting the clarity of the print. Most customers, however, use .png files. While .png files work well with 300dpi resolution, if you go below the 300dpi resolution your image will become grainy and not make a good print. Tip for .png files is get them larger than you need. You can shrink a .png and maintain or increase the dpi, however when you try to make a .png larger your dpi will decrease dramatically.
Understand Your Audience: Design with your target audience in mind to make sure your designs appeal to them. Local school mascots, businesses, and landmarks are always a great place to start.
Print Samples: Test your designs by printing samples to ensure they look as expected before you start printing for customers. Especially if your customer has specific color requirements. This can seem like wasted material and time, but this will benefit you in the long run before you have the dreaded "mess ups". Everyone has mess ups, do not let it discourage you. We typically use these mess ups to press other samples onto. Once we fill up both the inside and outside with test prints, we discard it.
4. Print Your Designs
This is where Arrowhead Trading Company comes in. You can use our online builder or submit a gang sheet for printing. Once printed you can pick up your prints at our office or get them shipped to you. You may be asking "What is a gang sheet?". A gang sheet is a printing method where multiple designs are arranged on a single sheet of DTF film. This approach is particularly useful for maximizing the use of space on the film, reducing waste, and saving costs, especially when you need to print numerous designs at once.
An example would be you are selling a business ten company t-shirts, and they ask for three different designs—a logo, a slogan, and a small emblem. Instead of printing each design on separate sheets, you can arrange all three on a single gang sheet. The designs are placed close together on the DTF film, allowing you to maximize the space and reduce costs. Once printed, you can cut out each design from the gang sheet and apply them individually to different t-shirts using a heat press.
5. Market Your T-Shirts
Effective marketing will help you reach your customers:
Create a Website: Build an online store where customers can view and buy your t-shirts. Include high-quality images and a user-friendly checkout process.
Utilize Social Media: Share your designs and engage with potential customers on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
Attend Local Events: Participate in local markets or events to sell your t-shirts and connect with customers.
6. Manage Your T-Shirt Business
To keep your business running smoothly:
Track Inventory: Keep an eye on your t-shirts and supplies to make sure you never run out.
Process Orders Efficiently: Handle orders promptly and provide excellent customer service.
Handle Finances: Manage your budget and expenses to ensure your business stays profitable. Do not forget to account for shipping costs from your suppliers. These can get out of hand quickly, especially if you order below their free shipping dollar amount. Sometimes you may want to consider purchasing extra of your high selling items to reach the free shipping threshold, versus paying for shipping costs.
